What is dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a noninvasive, exfoliating procedure that uses a medical grade scalpel to remove hair and dead skin cells from the face.
What are the benefits of undergoing dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning provides patients with smooth skin and a youthful glow. In addition, this treatment has been proven to help improve:
- Acne scars
- Unsightly pock marks
- Dull skin
- Dry skin
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Sun related damage
Do I need to take any precautions prior to treatment?
If you’re in the midst of an acne flare up, you may need to reschedule your appointment. Undergoing treatment during a flare up can irritate the skin further and increase the risk of injury and infection. In addition, be sure to apply sunscreen and avoid excessive sun exposure for at least a week prior to undergoing dermaplaning. Sunburns increase skin sensitivity and can make the shaving process extremely uncomfortable.
What happens during a dermaplaning procedure?
To begin, your skin care professional will cleanse the skin to remove excess dirt, oil and bacteria. Next, a lubricating oil will be applied to the face to help the exfoliating blade glide smoothly. Note that If you have particularly sensitive skin, your provider will likely offer sedation options, including numbing spray and topical anesthesia. At this point, the exfoliation process will begin. Your esthetician will hold your skin taut and shave your face at a 45 degree angle, intermittently applying a warm towel to remove stray hair. Once the shaving process is complete, you’ll receive aloe gel and moisturizer to hydrate and soothe the skin, as well as sunscreen to protect your face following treatment. The entire process should last 20-30 minutes and should produce immediate results.
What can I expect after treatment?
Following your dermaplaning procedure, you may experience soreness or redness, which can be treated using a cold compress. This is typically mild and should dissipate within 3-4 days. It’s also important to be cognizant of sun exposure and apply sunscreen daily for at least 3 weeks following treatment. Sunburns can reverse the effects of dermaplaning and produce blemishes on sensitive skin.
How often should I undergo dermaplaning treatment?
To prevent complications, experts recommend waiting at least 1 month between appointments. Patients with particularly sensitive skin should undergo dermaplaning a maximum of 4 times per year.
How long do the results of dermaplaning last?
The effects from dermaplaning typically last between 3-4 weeks.Call Us
