4 MUSTS for you summer skincare routine!

We’ve been waiting all year for this! Counting the days, the minutes even…summer has officially arrived. The days are longer, the temperature is rising- it is the time to see and be seen! You are so totally ready for this season, so why does it feel like your skin isn’t? Many of us suffer from the dreaded summer breakout. Battling with acne during the warm summer months is actually quite common among people of ages. As the temperature and humidity rise we find that we sweat quite a bit more than usual. The sweat mixed with sebum (an oily/waxy substance naturally produced by the skin) is a recipe for clogged pores, which then leads to whiteheads, cysts, and all that other fun stuff. Between breaking out and the potential of getting sunburned…summer can wreak havoc on our complexions. Do not fear, there are steps we can take to help fight this issue and get back to enjoying our summer!

1. Exfoliating is a crucial part of removing the dead cells from the surface of your skin. Choose a product with gentle microbeads and massage into your skin one or two times a week. This will help remove build up from your skin and allow your pores to open up and breathe. Be careful not to over exfoliate. Rubbing too hard and exfoliating too often can irritate your skin.

2. Choose a moisturizer with SPF in it. The summer sun is very strong and out for many hours. Our faces are exposed to it much more than the rest of our bodies. We all know the importance of wearing SPF, but sometimes we don’t realize how much sun exposure we are really getting. It is far too annoying to put on sunblock every time we run to the store or take out the garbage, etc. Using a moisturizer with SPF already in it saves you time and freckles!

3. Make sure to get your fill of antioxidants. Antioxidants are a natural substance found mostly in foods and hygiene products that help repair and defend cell damage caused by free radicals in the environment. Think of it as extra armour for your complexion. These vitamins and minerals can help improve your skin’s texture and tone. Though you can find them in beauty products the best way to get your antioxidants is to eat them…that way you can benefit from the inside out! The good news is there are plenty of delicious foods that are filled with them. Make your next snack any of these: pecans, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, kale, beans, dark chocolate…and you are good to go!
